CONTEST RULES AND GUIDELINES
Saturday Matinee (qualifying Round):
Saturday Night Finals (evening):

PLEASE NOTE: Professional quartets are not allowed to compete.
Competing in more than one group: An individual may compete in up to two quartets subject to these limitations
Contest Scoring:
- 1. The contest is open to all male, female, and mixed (2M-2W or 3 & 1) quartets.
- 2. Songs are to be performed a cappella (without instrumental accompaniment).
- 3. To encourage younger singers, quartets with 2 or more members under 25 will have the registration fee waived.
Saturday Matinee (qualifying Round):
- 1. The qualifying round will be held during the Matinee beginning at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 23rd, 2019
- 2. You are required to sing two songs.
- 3. The first song, your warm-up number, which may be in any style you choose, will not be judged.
- 4. The second song, your contest number, should be in the “barbershop” style.
- (Please see important change below about having a second contest number prepared IF you qualify for the finals.
- 5. >>>>NEW Non-Singing time limit: To allow for an improved audience experience and sufficient time for all groups to perform, we are adding a time limit. Total stage time is limited to 8 minutes. Time starts when your name is announced through to when you cut off your last chord. A penalty of 10 points may be subtracted from your Performance score for exceeding the ⌚ e limit. That is per judge for a potential of 30 point penalty.
- 6. The top 8 quartets and a mic tester, according to our judges’ scores, will be selected to perform on the Saturday night finals
- 7. Individual Score sheets will be provided to contestants who do not move on to the final round.
Saturday Night Finals (evening):
- 1. If your quartet makes the finals, you must be prepared to perform a NEW contest number different than sung in the matinee, along with your warm up number (you may still vary the warm-up number).
- 2. The newly added contest matrix will produce a cumulative score of your contest number from the matinee and your 2nd new contest number in the evening finals. The combined score will determine final placement of contestants by the judges.
Matinee
- 1. Quartet 1 sings warm up number “How Deep is your love” and contest number “Itsy Bitsy Spider”
- 2. Quartet 1 qualifies for the top 8
- 1. Quartet 1 sings warm up number “How Deep is your love” and contest number “I’m a little teapot”
- 2. “Itsy Bitsy Spider” scores 82 pts and “I’m a little teapot” scores 85
- 3. Quartets cumulative score for finals placement is 167 points

- 1. The individual cannot compete with songs common to both quartets. (Johnny cannot sing "Just in time" with two different quartets)
- 2. The other 3 individual quartet members must be unique singers to each group
Contest Scoring:
- Judging of songs, performed in traditional Barbershop Harmony style, will be based on the following criteria.
- UPDATE: After discussions with our new judges and to improve accuracy of scoring the judges and committee have agreed to raise the score threshold to 100 points from the original 40.
- A) SINGING - Blend, tuning, vocal production 100 Points
B) MUSICAL EXPRESSION - Musicality, dynamics and style 100 Points
C) PERFORMANCE - Showmanship, personality, presentation of song** 100 Points - **NOTE: The scoring of Gay 90's attire has been eliminated to focus on a more modern competition. This however doesn't preclude quartets from dressing in a manner that enhances their performance.
- A) SINGING - Blend, tuning, vocal production 100 Points
- Score sheets and judges notes will be provided this year, and will be based on the Barbershop Harmony and Sweet Adeline scoring systems. This will allow judges to give scores that are more consistent and provide your quartet with helpful feedback.

- Miscellaneous Items
- 1. Quartets will receive up to four complimentary tickets to both shows for spouses or significant others. As all seats are reserved please indicate the number of tickets you need when you register.
- 2. Quartet members’ badges give them entry to all shows.
- 3. For participating quartet members only, we will maintain a limited hospitality room with beverages available during all shows.
- CONTEST ENTRY
- 1. NEW Maximum number of contestants To ensure the matinee run time is not excessive and for quartets to rest before the finals, we are limiting registration to 20 quartets to sign up in advance. A waiting list will be established should the maximum number of quartets be met.
- 2. NEW Choose your singing order. To encourage early sign ups we will be offering quartets the opportunity to select your performance time slot. This singing order draw time of your choosing will be available on a first come first served basis, upon receipt of a complete registration of your quartet.
- 3. Once you have paid $50 registration fee* and registered your quartet you will be sent to a link where you can choose your singing draw position.
- 4. NEW *Youth quartet fee waiver: To encourage young singers, quartets with 2 or more members under 25 years of age will have their entry fee waived.
- 5. Registration begins Noon Saturday, January 05, 2019
